Have you ever felt like you are running on a treadmill; busy, moving, but not really getting anywhere? I did too, until I realized that hard work alone wasn’t enough. The real game-changer was learning to lead myself with intention. The question is, who’s really in charge of your life; you, or the circumstances around you?
Self-leadership is the practice of intentionally guiding oneself toward personal and professional goals through self-awareness, discipline, and accountability. It involves taking responsibility for one’s actions, making conscious decisions, and continuously improving to become the best version of oneself.
Self-leadership is not an automatic process. It requires intentionality, discipline, and self-awareness. For a long time, I believed that hard work alone would push me forward, but I realized this month, that without personal reflection and intentional decision-making, I was simply busy, not necessarily in control.
I have had to learn to take responsibility for my actions, set clear objectives, and make decisions that align with my values and vision. There were moments when I felt lost, unsure of whether I was making progress or just moving in circles. The turning point came when I realized that self-leadership must be a deliberate choice. Without it, my direction remained unclear.
In the process, understanding my strengths, weaknesses, and priorities has been another major shift in my journey. I have had to be honest with myself about where I am and to identify where I want to go. This level of self-awareness has given me the confidence to take control of my choices and ensure that my actions reflect my purpose rather than external expectations.
I recently read a book about personal growth that helped me realize that motivation may get you started, but discipline is what sustains you. There were days when I was excited about my goals, but there have also been times when I felt exhausted and unmotivated. It has been in those moments that I had to remind myself that consistency is key. That success is not about bursts of effort but about making intentional choices every single day.
One of the most valuable lessons I have learned in the past month is the power of reflection. I used to move from one task to another without taking a step back to assess whether my actions aligned with my larger goals. But by reflecting, I have been able to gain insight into my decision-making patterns and developed a stronger sense of direction. Reflection has become my tool for realignment whenever I feel stuck. Can be yours too!
The second lesson is that challenges are inevitable, and I have faced my fair share of them. There were moments when I questioned whether I was capable, whether I was making the right choices. But I have come to see every challenge as an opportunity to gain experience and improve. Instead of viewing setbacks as failures, I have learned to embrace them as steppingstones to greater growth. Taking responsibility for my reactions to challenges has allowed me to grow stronger and more resilient. This is all because I can reflect and learn from what I have been through over the years.
One of the greatest enemies of self-leadership is complacency and for me, taking ownership of my life has required me to step beyond my comfort zone repeatedly. Some decisions have been difficult, but embracing discomfort and making bold choices has helped me navigate change with confidence. I have learned that growth happens when I am willing to take risks and trust in my ability to adapt. I realized that the fears I had were lies from the enemy, keeping me from stepping into what God has for me. I know there are people that could be struggling with this but let it be to your encouragement that you can be more than you are right now.
I have discovered that self-leadership is also about character. Beyond skills and achievements, I have worked on developing qualities such as honesty, accountability, and resilience which heavily shape my character. These have strengthened my decision-making and helped to build trust with those around me. I realized that leading myself well means staying true to my values even when no one is watching, or no one shares the same values with me.
I have appreciated that true self-leadership extends beyond personal success; it has pushed me to take responsibility for my impact on others. I now find joy in making intentional choices that align with my purpose and positively influence those around me. That the decisions I make not only shape my life but also affect those who look up to me or work alongside me. Leading myself well then, ensures that my influence is meaningful. This for me, is the greatest fulfilment in life.
Self-leadership therefore is the bridge between where you are and where you could be. It is going to demand intentionality, self-awareness, consistency, reflection, resilience, and character for you to thrive in this discipline. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve embraced is that “You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.” And so, by leading myself well, I am unlocking my full potential and ensuring that my choices shape the life I truly desire.
So, friends, are you ready to take control of your self-leadership journey? Start today by setting clear intentions, making decisions that align with your values, and holding yourself accountable to the person you want to become.
It is very important for you to make this deliberate decision to pursue self-leadership because by doing that, it will be evident that your life reflects greater clarity in decision-making, consistent discipline, resilience in challenges, stronger relationships, personal fulfillment, visible progress toward goals, and a positive influence on others; all stemming from intentionality, accountability, and a commitment to growth.
Cheers!

Wow so helpful. Thank you sir 🤍
I have learned that for the gifts the Lord has given me to be manifested, i need to overcome my fears because there are certain assignments I’m trying to run away from them especially in the ministry because of fear.
